What Happened?

In a 5-2 Vote tonight the City Council Approved the General Plan and Zoning changes to put in a 32 unit development at 1930 Ocean Street Extension. It is not 40 units but it is still considerably higher density than the general plan.

Yay votes: Watkins, Chase, Mathews, Noroyan, Terazzas
Nay votes: Krohn, Brown

Community members from OCE and so many other neighborhoods spoke passionately about the need to protect the General Plan and stave off reckless development.

There were also many business¬†groups, other developers, family of the developers, and some residents and some ‘YIMBYs’ that were in favor of the development.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to write letters and come and give public comment! It was an amazing showing of community support for this street and for sound city planning.

What’s Next?

Elections! It’s clear that the SC City Council is pro-development. There are three seats up for grabs in November. Richelle Noroyan is the only council person running for re-election. Voters need to send her and others a clear message that railroading community doesn’t work in Santa Cruz. Tell your friend and family to vote no on Noroyan and consider donating or volunteering for her opposition.

Stay tuned and get involved! OCENA is considering a lawsuit to stop this project from moving forward. Send us an email if you want in on the decision and action.
